Olasubomi “Shubbie” Aishida is a social entrepreneur and community organizer based in Hayward, California. Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, she grew up in a household defined by generosity — her father regularly welcomed neighbors into their home and helped fund college educations for children who couldn’t otherwise afford them. She went on to earn a master’s degree in international development and social work in London, worked in health and human services, and began a PhD in health care studies before an offhand question from her father — asking her to identify and pursue her real passions — set her on a different path entirely.
In 2017, Shubbie co-founded Golden Safari Restaurant and Bakery in downtown Hayward with her husband, Bisi Oparinde, bringing Nigerian comfort food to the community and employing local youth. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, rather than laying off staff or shutting down, she redirected the restaurant’s resources toward feeding the community — delivering meals to fire stations, hospitals, and families in need. That effort grew into Peace Haven, a nonprofit she’d founded in 2019, and eventually into the Peace Haven Freedom Store: a full storefront in a former barbershop where everything — food, clothing, toiletries — is free and open to anyone, regardless of income or housing status.
